Leonard Bernstein - Young People's Concerts / New York Philharmonic

Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts with the New York Philharmonic stand among his greatest achievements. These televised programs introduced an entire generation to the joys of classical music. Bernstein conducted his first Young People's Concert on January 18, 1958, just two weeks after becoming Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Such programs were already a Philharmonic tradition when Bernstein arrived, but he made them a centerpiece of his work, part of what he described as his "educational mission." Looking back on the concerts years later, he referred to them as being "among my favorite, most highly prized activities of my life." When he took a sabbatical season from the orchestra in 1964-65, he still came back to lead the Young People's Concerts. He continued to lead these programs until 1972, even though he had stepped down as director of the Philharmonic in 1969. Bernstein led a total of fifty-three Young People's Concerts during those fourteen years, and covered a broad range of subjects. The works of the great composers were explored, including tributes to modern masters such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, Gustav Holst, Aaron Copland and Charles Ives. Bernstein discussed "Jazz in the Concert Hall," "Folk Music in the Concert Hall," and "The Latin-American Spirit." He explained the intricacies of Music Theory in programs such as "Musical Atoms: A Study of Intervals" and "What is a Mode?" He broached complex aesthetic issues such as "What Does Music Mean?" (his first program) with clarity and without condescension. Bernstein also used the Young People's Concerts to introduce young performers to the musical world. The sixteen year-old pianist André Watts made his debut in the concert of January 15, 1963. Originally broadcast on Saturday mornings, the programs were considered so important that for three glorious years CBS presented them at 7:30 p.m. (prime time for television viewing). Eventually the programs were moved to Sunday afternoons. The concerts were translated into other languages and syndicated to forty countries.

Why Cross Training is Important

!±8± Why Cross Training is Important

In today's fitness world, there are a bevy of fairly new fitness crazes (think Zumba, belly dancing, spinning class, etc.), as well as the tried-and-true standards (running, weight-lifting, cycling, etc.). But to properly tone your muscles, improve your endurance, and to strengthen your cardiovascular health, you need to cross train. And if you've hit a plateau in your quest to drop those last 10 pounds, cross-training is the way to go. The definition of cross training is obvious by wording alone: train in different fitness activities by varying your routine to include aerobic activity with strength/flexibility training. The benefits of cross training are numerous:

Prevent injuries As a runner, the continual pounding on pavement may lead to stress fractures or other injuries. Mixing up your cardio routine with elliptical machines or other low-impact conditioning activities can improve your cardio endurance without the injury risks of constant running. Physical Therapy:If you're unable to run, due to an injury, cross training allows you to continue to build your fitness levels despite being sidelined from your favorite activity. Swim if you're unable to cycle. In-line skate or perhaps cross-country ski if you can't run. Take a yoga class if you can't lift weights. Add some spice: Just as with any activity, if you do one thing often enough and without variation, you're likely to grow bored. It's no different with fitness activities. Vary your workout routine to help stay motivated, add fun, and increase stamina. Don't burn yourself out with just one activity. Better flexibility and stability: For the same reason football players may take ballet or basketball players may enroll in yoga classes, runners need to do alternative sports & exercises to improve overall flexibility, stability and performance. Again, Cross-Training is the answer!

No matter how much variation you plan on adding to your routine, it all starts with a single step. Take a long run today. Get up early and swim tomorrow. The next day, bike through the park. By alternating your usual fitness activities with your routine workouts, you can help prevent injury, avoid boredom and boost your fitness levels!

Using an Elliptical Trainer For Warm Ups

!±8± Using an Elliptical Trainer For Warm Ups

At least once a week we use an elliptical machine for a one hour cardio workout. In fact my buddies all agree that without the use of an elliptical trainer we would weigh 10 to 15 percent more than we do now. We also use the elliptical trainer for warm-ups prior to other sports activities. We almost never use a treadmill any more due to the knee problems they cause most of us.

For the past 3 years we use the elliptical trainer at our dojang for at least 15 minutes prior to our tae kwon do classes. As we have gotten older it is a real fight to stay flexible especially in the hips, knees and ankles. A full 3o minutes of stretching and then a short ride on the elliptical really makes a difference in terms of injuries as well. Even the lower rank students are now catching on and using the elliptical to warm up. If you do not get to class early frequently you will lose you opportunity to use the elliptical for a warm up.

Friday is legs day at the gym. That means we start out with squats then move to the leg press and lastly a tough work out on the hack squat machine. If you are 30 to 40 years old you know that this is the strongest time in your life in terms of power. Most of us made our peak in both squats and benches at this age. On the down side you also start to feel the pressures in your knees and back especially doing squats. Again a couple of us are using the elliptical trainer to warm up our hips and knees before doing any serious pushes. As a result we feel that we have experienced far less injuries and pain. We also have found that we can go deeper on the hack squat as well.

Most of my buddies are also addicted to the game of racquetball. Like me we have been playing ever since we were in the military and college. In an average week we play about four hours of intense play. In general we have far more injuries playing racquetball then in any other sports activity including basketball. The game requires sudden dives to make "gets". Side loads to the knees can be extreme. A good game of racquetball will cause you to use muscles that you do not use in most other sports activities. Legs, back and hips all get a good workout and will painfully remind you of the game the next day. As a result I have been sneaking into the gym for a 20 minutes easy ride on the elliptical trainer prior to playing to warm up my old body. As a result my game has improved and I have had less injuries.

I am sure it will not be long before my playing partners figure out that I am warming up on the elliptical trainer before the games. Let's face it we all want to be active and play all the sports we can without injury and pain. We feel that the elliptical trainer is a great piece of warm up equipment that allows us to do just that. Give it a try and you may be surprised by the benefits of a good warm up.

Smooth And Durable - Life Fitness Elliptical Cross Trainers

!±8± Smooth And Durable - Life Fitness Elliptical Cross Trainers

Life Fitness makes some of the best elliptical trainers on the market. They have a variety of models for all different kinds of workouts. Life Fitness Elliptical Cross Trainers are used in gyms and fitness clubs all over the country. That tells you that they make a quality machine.

Life Fitness has several models.

X1 - This is their most basic model, but that doesn't mean that they cut out any of the high quality they're known for. Like the other models, the X1 is known for its smooth, natural elliptical feel. What you're missing with this model are the advanced features and programmable options.

X3 - There are two models of X3; one has a simple heart rate readout, and the other has more features, including realtime interactive heart rate monitoring.

X5i - The X5 goes one step further and gives you adjustable stride length.

X9i - This model is the top of the heap. Actually, this is the commercial grade model used in gyms, but it's available for home purchase as well.

Why Life Fitness Machines Are Popular

Life Fitness trainers are sturdy. Because they are designed to be used in a gym, their ellipticals are tough. They can hold up to 300 pounds without any trouble, and can be run hard for long periods of time. The parts are high quality and not prone to break.

These ellipticals have a 19 inch stride, which is slightly larger than that of most ellipticals. This makes gives them a much more comfortable and natural feel.

Like most ellipticals, Life Fitness machines have heart rate monitors. They also have the My Personal Trainer software which you can use to create your own workout. This helps athletes who want to make sure they have a full body workout.

Life Fitness Has It Down To A Science

Life Fitness ellipticals are known from their smoothness. Other machines just don't compare. This remarkably smooth movement is the result of the scientific research that they put into designing their machines. The company has its own biomechanics program to study how the body moves.

They also have the Life Fitness Academy. This is a collection of fitness professionals and experts that the company consults in order to design the best machine possible.

The Cons

Unfortunately, Life Fitness doesn't offer much of a warrantee. Their standard warrantees are for only a couple of years, as compared to other companies like Sole that offer 15 year warrantees. While this is a drawback, Life Fitness elliptical cross trainers rarely have any mechanical problems or repairs.

The other drawback is that all this fancy scientific research and biomechanics costs you. Life Fitness machines aren't cheap, but they aren't cheaply made either. If you want a Life Fitness trainer, you can expect to pay well over ,500. Even the mid-range models like the X3's go for about ,000 new.

If you're serious about getting a great elliptical workout, a Life Fitness elliptical cross trainer is for you. This is a durable machine with lots of programmable options for the serious trainer. It's great for athletes who want to vary their workout. There are lots of ways to use the Life Fitness elliptical.
